Lumigan (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.01%) is a prescription eye drop classified as a prostaglandin analog. It is primarily used to reduce elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in individuals with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension—two common eye conditions that, if untreated, can lead to optic nerve damage and vision loss.
Bimatoprost mimics the effects of naturally occurring prostamides in the eye to increase the outflow of aqueous humor via the uveoscleral pathway, effectively reducing IOP.
Indications for use:
Primary open-angle glaucoma: A chronic condition where the eye's drainage canals become clogged over time, causing elevated IOP (intraocular pressure).
Ocular hypertension: A condition involving high IOP without optic nerve damage, which still poses a risk for developing glaucoma.
Reducing IOP is the only proven way to slow or prevent progressive optic nerve damage and vision loss due to glaucoma.
Off-label use may include adjunctive therapy in certain secondary glaucomas, as determined by a healthcare provider.
To comply with Canadian International Pharmacy Association regulations you are permitted to order a 3-month supply or the closest package size available based on your personal prescription. read more
Dosage: Use one drop into the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening.
Administration:
Wash hands thoroughly before application.
Tilt your head back and gently pull the lower eyelid to form a small pocket.
Hold the dropper above the eye and instill one drop without touching the eye or eyelid.
Gently close the eye and apply light pressure to the inner corner (punctal occlusion) for 1–2 minutes to minimize drainage and enhance the delivery of medication.
If using other ophthalmic medications, wait at least 5 to 10 minutes between different products.
Remove contact lenses before administration. Lenses may be reinserted 15 minutes after use to prevent irritation or discoloration caused by the preservative (benzalkonium chloride).
Do not exceed once-daily dosing, as more frequent administration may reduce IOP-lowering effectiveness.
Who should not use Lumigan:
Individuals with hypersensitivity to bimatoprost or any component of the formulation.
Those with a history of macular edema, uveitis, or aphakia should use with caution.
Tell your doctor if you have:
History of eye inflammation (e.g., uveitis)
Cystoid macular edema
Ocular trauma or surgery
No natural lens (aphakia) or pseudophakia with torn posterior capsule
No known interactions exist between food and drink.
Alcohol does not have a documented interaction, but should be consumed cautiously if you have concurrent health conditions.
Use the missed dose as soon as remembered, unless it’s almost time for the next scheduled dose.
Do not double the dose to catch up. Resume the regular dosing schedule.
Common side effects:
Conjunctival hyperemia (eye redness)
Eyelash changes: increased length, thickness, pigmentation
Ocular pruritus (itching)
Dry eye or tearing
Less common but potentially serious side effects:
Increased brown pigmentation of the iris (usually permanent and often unilateral)
Darkening of the eyelids and skin surrounding the eyelids
Ocular inflammation (e.g., iritis, uveitis)
Cystoid macular edema, especially in patients post-cataract surgery
Bacterial keratitis from a contaminated bottle tip (do not touch the tip of the dropper)
Signs of allergic reaction (seek emergency care):
Facial or throat swelling
Wheezing, difficulty breathing
Rash or hives
Report side effects to the FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088 or at www.fda.gov/medwatch.
Store refrigerated or at room temperature, between 36°F and 77°F (2°C to 25°C).

Drug Interactions:
No major drug interactions have been documented.
Still, inform your doctor about all medications, including:
Topical ophthalmics
Prescription medications
Over-the-counter supplements
Herbal products
Ocular hygiene tips:
Avoid letting the dropper tip touch any surface, including your eye or fingers.
Inappropriate use may lead to bacterial contamination and serious eye infections.
Cosmetic effects:
Increased eyelash growth and changes in iris color may be noticeable after several months.
These effects may be asymmetric (only occurring on one side) and are often irreversible after discontinuation.
