Introduction

CREON (Lipase protease amylase) is a class of medication composed of a mixture of digestive enzymes (pancrelipase) which has been proven to help the body digest difficult foods. It contains three key enzymes that help it to digest foods: lipase, protease, and amylase. Each of which assist in breaking down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates that are commonly seen as the macros within most food groups.

CREON (Lipase protease amylase) is especially useful for individuals with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), a condition where the pancreas fails to produce sufficient digestive enzymes.

How to Take CREON

Always swallow CREON capsules in their whole form. And take them with enough liquid to swallow them along with your food. If you have trouble swallowing capsules, open the capsules and sprinkle the contents on a small amount of room-temperature, acidic food, like applesauce, bananas, or plain Greek yogurt. Drink enough liquid to make sure the medicine is swallowed completely. Alternatively, crushing, chewing, or allowing the CREON capsules to dissolve in your mouth may irritate you or change the way the substance works in and for your body. If you’re opting to put CREON on your food, swallow it right after you mix it. Avoid storing any foods that have had CREON placed on top of them as part of your medical routine.

Special Precautions

CREON (Lipase protease amylase) may cause a more serious bowel disorder called fibrosing colonopathy, especially if taken at a high dose for a long time in children with cystic fibrosis. In addition, it may increase the uric acid levels in the blood (hyperuricemia).  This medicine is made from the pancreas of pigs. Some pigs' organs have transmitted certain viruses to people who have received them, although the risk is low. All are tested for viruses to keep the transmission risk low.

Lastly, CREON  (Lipase protease amylase), has been known to cause serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis and asthma, which can be life-threatening and require immediate medical attention. If you’re experiencing stomach problems or increased digestion problems from taking CREON (Lipase protease amylase), contact your primary care physician right away.
