How to Use

Sodium polystyrene sulfonate (SPS) (or Kayexalate) comes in two forms:

  • Powder: Contains 3.5 grams per level teaspoon for reconstitution into a suspension.

  • Liquid Suspension: Comes in a 15 g per 60 mL bottle.

Although the powder form requires mixing before use, both forms can deliver the same dosages. Your dose depends on your potassium levels, how well you're responding to the medication, and whether you experience any side effects.

Adults:

  • Oral: The typical dose is 15 grams, taken 1 to 4 times daily.

  • Rectal (Enema): The typical dose is 30 to 50 grams, inserted into the rectum every 6 hours.

Children:

A doctor will determine if SPS (or Kayexalate) is safe for your child and calculate the correct dose based on their blood potassium levels.

Sodium polystyrene sulfonate (SPS) (or Kayexalate) can interact with certain medications or supplements. Always inform your doctor and pharmacist about all your medications or supplements, including over-the-counter products, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Below are some important interactions:
