Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) commonly prescribed to manage high blood pressure (hypertension), protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes, and lower the risk of stroke in patients with certain heart conditions. It works by relaxing blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily while reducing strain on internal organs (e.g., kidneys, heart).
Hypertension: Used alone or with other medications to treat high blood pressure in adults and children age 6 and older.
Stroke Risk Reduction: Decreases the risk of stroke in some patients with high blood pressure and left ventricular hypertrophy (thickening of the heart wall).
Diabetic Nephropathy: Manage kidney disease in people with type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure, especially those with elevated creatinine and proteinuria.
To comply with Canadian International Pharmacy Association regulations you are permitted to order a 3-month supply or the closest package size available based on your personal prescription. read more
Losartan is prescribed to help manage cardiovascular and renal conditions where the hormone angiotensin II causes blood vessels to constrict. By blocking this hormone, losartan helps to:
Lower blood pressure
Reduce the risk of stroke and heart complications
Slow kidney damage in diabetic patients
Losartan is often considered as an alternative for individuals who cannot tolerate ACE inhibitors due to side effects like coughing. Persistent dry cough is a potential side effect of losartan as well, but the risk is significantly lower when compared with ACE inhibitors.
Adults: Typically 50 mg once daily, may be increased to a maximum of 100 mg/day depending on response.
Children (6+ years): Dosed based on body weight (starting at 0.7 mg/kg), up to 50 mg/day.
Take with or without food.
Stay hydrated, especially if you’re sick or sweating excessively, to avoid dehydration and low blood pressure.
Blood pressure and kidney function may be monitored regularly during treatment.
Take as soon as you remember unless it’s close to your next dose. Do not double up.
Symptoms may include dizziness, fainting, or irregular heartbeat.
